Eddie Harris was an American jazz musician and composer. He was best known for his innovative use of the electric saxophone and his pioneering fusion of jazz and funk. He released over 30 albums during his career, and won two Grammy Awards. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began playing the saxophone at the age of nine. He attended DuSable High School and Roosevelt University, and then joined the U.S. Navy Band. After his service, he moved to Los Angeles and began performing with various jazz groups. He released his debut album, Exodus to Jazz, in 1960. He went on to release a number of successful albums, including The Electrifying Eddie Harris, The In Sound, and Is It In. He also composed the soundtrack for the film The French Connection. He won two Grammy Awards for his albums The In Sound and Is It In. He died in 1996 at the age of 61.
